The Asticou Inn stands at the north end of Northeast Harbor, the foot of Eliot Mountain, and is adjacent to Acadia National Park. Our spectacular harbor views, combined with the hotel's charm and our commitment to superior service, make the Asticou an excellent choice for your Mount Desert Island vacation. In adherence to the lasting character of the Inn, guest rooms do not have a TV (Topsider suites being the exception). There is a TV lounge located off the lobby in the Main Inn. The Asticou property includes the Main Inn, as well as four adjacent accommodations, all of which offer the same services and access to all of our amenities. The four adjacent accomodations – Cranberry Lodge, Blue Spruce, Bird Bank and Topsider Cottages, are all within easy walking distance of the Inn.

Galyn’s Restaurant was established in 1986, but the building dates back to the 1890s when it was constructed as a boarding house for local seafarers. Although not much has been written about the building, old-timers tell us it has a colorful past. An illegal speakeasy occupied the downstairs during the prohibition era, and some say there was a gambling casino hidden in the back as well.

As the son of a lobster fisherman, Richard Harding learned all he needed to know about lobsters through his father, who fished the waters of Frenchman's bay from the 1930's to the 1960's. Upon returning home from service during the Korean War, Richard married Joyce Ashe and started a full-service gas station in Ellsworth. In 1970, Dick and Joyce also decided to try their hand in the restaurant business. They bought some land and a small take-out stand in Trenton, Maine and started what would eventually become the Gateway Lobster Pound. For about the next half a decade, Dick managed the gas station while Joyce ran the take-out stand. In 1974, Joyce and Dick got rid of the small stand and built Gateway Lobster Pound, a full-service restaurant. Mainly due to the oil crisis of 1973, coupled with the declining popularity of full-service gas stations, Dick eventually sold the gas station and decided to join his wife at Gateway.
