In the mid-1990s Central Maine Medical Center began establishing a dedicated trauma program that was later designated as one of three such programs in Maine. This program was bolstered in 1998 with the creation of LifeFlight of Maine, a medical helicopter service jointly administered with Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.In 1999 Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital and Rumford Community Hospital merged with Central Maine Healthcare, CMMC’s parent company. The facilities soon changed their names to Bridgton Hospital and Rumford Hospital. In addition to the healthcare services that Central Maine Healthcare has helped develop at the two organizations, the holding company has assisted in plant development at the facilities. In December 2001, Bridgton Hospital dedicated an entirely new state-of-the-art facility.

The Rumford Community Dental health center is located in the River Valley Technology Center in the business district of downtown Rumford, adjacent to the New Page Mill and directly across from the Dunkin Donuts. There is on street parking and parking further down Lowell Street in two lots on either side of the street.

Rumford Hospital is a critical access hospital, providing comprehensive primary care and sophisticated diagnostic services, including CT scanning, ultrasound and osteoporosis DEXA screening. The hospital offers medical surgical nursing services, a birthing center, women's health services and ambulatory surgery. Our Swing Bed program provides care for patients who need skilled nursing services. RH also maintains a 24-hour emergency department and staffs an Intensive Care Unit.

The historical development of Stephens Memorial Hospital (SMH) provides a good illustration of the strength and determination of its founders to meet the healthcare needs of their community. SMH opened on February 4, 1957, in (what used to be) the Foster House on Main Street and contained 25 patient beds. Space was very tight but the dedication and hard work of the staff led to the hospital's future growth. Ten years later, a new wing was added increasing the number of beds to 41. At this time, the medical staff consisted of six physicians. Our mission is to ensure an accessible, affordable and appropriate integrated health care system to improve the health and well being of the community.
