Monhegan Island, 10 miles out to sea, is one and one-half miles long and one-half mile wide, covering about 700 acres. It is an island unique in its geographical diversity. The eastern side of Monhegan has high cliffs that offer the visitor breathtaking views of sea and surf. The central part of the island provides miles of well-cared-for trails including Cathedral Woods, a must-see for all visitors. From the western, or village side of Monhegan, one can see a beautiful harbor, nearby Manana Island or one of Monhegan’s famous sunsets while relaxing on Swim Beach.
