It is the sole axis of Jewish activity between Augusta and Bangor and is essential to the strength and vibrancy of Central Maine's Jewish presence.
Beth Israel Congregation was chartered on June 16, 1902 and for the past 107 years, Beth Israel has helped us to commemorate, to remember, and to reflect on the life-cycle events that define and illuminate our Jewish lives with treasured moments of family and faith. The Synagogue provides the central focus for religious, educational, and social aspects of Jewish life in the Waterville Area--from High Holy Day and Shabbat services, to festival celebrations, to children being named, weddings performed, and funeral and Yahrzeit services. Bar/bat mitzvah training and services, and conversion instruction are also conducted--all under Beth Israel's roof. The Synagogue also provides pastoral counseling, Hebrew School, Pre-Hebrew School, adult education in various Jewish studies including Hebrew, a newsletter, bagel breakfasts, lectures on topics of current interest, and other social events including Purim, Hanukkah, and other holiday celebrations and social gatherings, along with outreach services by the Cantor and the Congregation. The Synagogue has always had a close association with Colby College and opens its doors to all area college students and non-members. The number of Congregation members today is approximately the same as the historical average since the post-WWII days of the 1950s. However, the makeup of today's membership is significantly different than the old established families. Today's members are of diverse backgrounds and ages, intermarriages, and from many places both nationally and internationally -- and the Synagogue has evolved both religiously and socially to accommodate and embrace all new members. | | VISIT WEBSITE ADD A REVIEW |
